dreams (1990) – a legendary director’s dreams for every dreamer

Deams (1990) is a late‑career masterpiece: a poetic, visually stunning anthology revealing Kurosawa’s deepest fears, hopes, and environmental concerns. It has mix of folklore, personal reflection, and cautionary themes.

Normally, I find films made up of loosely connected stories off-putting—there’s often no consistent rhythm or satisfying conclusion like The French Dispatch (20221). But Dreams is different. Each segment is visually stunning and completely distinct, capturing the surreal and unpredictable quality of actual dreams. There's a genuine sense of anticipation with each new vignette, and while the stories defy logic, they're as mysterious and compelling as they are strange.
