Louis C.K. has apparently come around on being exposed as a sexual menace back in 2017. In a new interview with Theo Von, the disgraced comedian said that he views his rise and fall as a form of liberation. “All of a sudden, nobody likes me,” C.K. told Von. “I was just spinning. It was really wild. But now I look at that thing as a beautiful thing.”
C.K. was on Von’s show to promote his new novel Ingram, which Von claimed he read. Von also said the book was fantastic. I remain doubtful of both claims. Despite being on Von’s show just two years ago, C.K. spoke at length about getting “canceled.” He explained how he now realizes the five separate allegations made against him by five different women changed his life for the better.
“When life fucks it up for you, when it gets torn up, it’s a relief,” C.K. said. “That’s why I felt free, because I had tried to manage these problems I had inside of me for so many years. And I tried to feel like I was a normal person. Or that I was what I thought of as a good person, but I was doing shit in the background of my life that I was ashamed of.”

I guess it’s progress that he feels ashamed of subjecting women to his masturbation without their consent. But it’s worth underscoring that “life” didn’t just throw C.K. a curveball. His actions are why his life got torn up, not some wild twist of fate. Throughout the two-and-a-half hour-long conversation with Von, C.K. did speak at length about his participation in Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous meetings. But he still seemed pretty wrapped up in his own mythos.
C.K. told Von that his attendance at those meetings was inspiring to others. “When I go to a meeting in person and there’s a guy who’s really hurting, I approach him and he’s not sure about being in this program,” the comedian explained.
“He goes, ‘Oh, I ruined my life.’ I go, ‘Do you know who I am?’ And he goes, ‘Yeah.’ And I go, ‘I’m doing pretty good, buddy,’” C.K. continued. “The fact that my wreckage can be a mountain for folks to lean on, take a little load off, that’s a beautiful gift.”
