Movies have to work fast these days. Nobody can pay attention to anything for longer than six seconds, so if you follow one character or plot line too long, audiences will forget what the other white guy named Chris has been up to. You have to rotate evenly between them like a carousel of fight scenes and explosions or suffer the inevitability of endless YouTube explainers.
Back in the day, though, you could have a big, long, juicy sequence that you could make audiences sit through without pulling out their phones. Some were so exciting that it never would have been a problem, even for today’s risk-shy studio execs, while some were so meditative that the modern mind simply can’t comprehend them. Reddit revealed them when one user asked r/AskReddit, “What’s the best 10 minutes in movie history?”
